It is the responsibility of every educational Institution to instill social commitment among its students. The National Service scheme of KMCT Polytechnic College is also functioning to realize this goal. The first NSS unit (Unit No. 190) of this college started its activities in November 2007. Sanction for the second unit were received in January 2009 (Unit No. 210). Now we have three NSS units functioning in our college.
The first social service programme of this College was conducted in December 2008 in Manassery by constructing a road from Kayyitta poyil to Kacheri. As a result of the hard work of the 38 member unit of our college, the road journey for the people of that locality became a pleasant reality. The second programme was the renovation of the road from Kalanthode to KMCT campus which was at that time, in a deplorable condition. The whole hearted co-operation and support we got from the auto workers and the local public in this venture was tremendous.
We conducted a combined 10-day camp of the two NSS units at the Govt. higher secondary school, Kunnamangalam in December 2009. The camp which was inaugurated by the president of the Kunnamangalam Panchayat, Mrs. Ramadevi had many programmes for the students. That included classes for personality development and attempts at instilling social awareness amongst the participants. This was followed by the cleaning up of the Chathan kadavu-Sivagiri road and the Velur canal. We were able to construct a new bridge there with the help of the President.
The volunteers participate in large numbers in the NSS meetings held every Friday and they chalked out new plans for future activities. As part of this, we are assisting the palliative care society in its endeavor. Two volunteers from the NSS unit of the KMCT Polytechnic College were among the 10 participants from Kerala who took part in the National camp held in Rajasthan. As our students regularly participate in the NSS activities and training programmes held outside the campus they have acquired leadership qualities and communication skills.
